Students have to perform independently and be willing to read or write, acknowledging that if they struggle, they will have to work through the problem or the difficult words themselves
Our argument:
Talk about how homework teaches students that leaving things to the last minute causes the stress and aches that they are talking about so actually having that stress helps them work on their time management.
Time management:
Broadens general knowledge:
Sets kids up for the future and will help them in their life
. Talk about how it could help you earn a job by doing homework nd if you hadn’t done any of that work then you would probably get fired from the job

Family time
When students are in their younger years, family time is most likely a priority for them, but with advanced technology and new entertainment, the last thing that the average teenager wants to do when they get home from an overwhelming day at school is spend time with their family. When adolescents and teenagers get home, they will most likely be playing fortnite and using social media apps such as snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Everyone has enough spare time to get off his or her device and do at least a page of homework. How many of you play fortnite instead of doing homework or spending time with your family? |
Homework produces a large amount of pointless work of little educational value
Give me an example of homework with no educational value? If the students give teachers feedback on what type of homework to give them than they can improve the quality and value of the work that they give you. |
Marking homework takes up too much time
Well planned homework should not take up too much time to mark, and if the educational value of the homework has been improved than taking time to mark it might not be such a bad thing. Teachers accept that marking student work is an important part of their job. Well planned homework should not take so long to mark that the rest of their job suffers, and it can inform their understanding of their students, helping them design new activities to engage and stretch their knowledge. As for recruitment, although teachers do often work in the evenings, they are not alone in this and they get long holidays to compensate. |
Homework puts students off learning
If the homework is interesting enough and has enough elements that relate to the kids than they will not get bored and enjoy the homework a lot more. Homework can be fun, but it is also supposed to extend students knowledge further and improve their understanding of the topic. |
Homework takes up too much time
Some teachers are bad at setting homework, and it should not take up too much of the students time, especially at our school. In year ten we get set very little homework. Therefore students should not be complaining about homework taking up too much of their time because 20 – 30 minutes of homework on average is not significantly much. |
Stress
If you haven’t done your homework, you will get more stressed. |If the students managed their time properly then they wouldn’t get stressed out on homework at all. They could, if they were diligent, get the homework done in one night. Stress is a part of homework, kids through their homework learn how to deal with stress which is important as in the future, there will be many stressful situations. By learning how to deal with stress at a young age will help in the future |
Not enough time for activities and hobbies after school
If it’s useful and fun homework that has been set correctly then there should be ample time for after school activities. Some people’s hobbies are doing homework because they want to excel at certain subjects, so if homework were to be banned students that enjoy homework would not be allowed to do homework. If teenagers would have too much time for leisure activities, the probability that they will interfere with some illegal or criminal issues rises greatly. The average teenager spends 6 hours on television, social media, and other advanced technology. 6 hours is a long time, so if you are saying that you do not have enough time for homework then you should rethink how much time you should spend and devices and you might not be managing your time well enough. Along with time management comes more free time, If you learn to manage your time properly, then you will get your homework done quicker with more time for extracurricular activities. |
“Statistics show that homework does not improve grades”
Studying is homework, so how is a student supposed to get a good grade on a test without revising and studying. Homework isn’t necessarily used to always improve test scores, it is used to widen their knowledge and improve their understanding of the information given in class. Self-study is one of the most important steps in understanding learning materials. Homework allows students to practice what they were taught in class. It also gives them discipline and responsibility. Listening to the teacher in class is not enough, in order to achieve your goals and become a successful person you need to practice and learn how to work on your own. A recent study shows that homework improves students grades by 72.9% For students in the earliest years of school, homework can help to develop positive attitudes, good habits and personality traits. For students upper primary school years, homework plays a more direct role in fostering improved school achievement. For students in their high school years, homework plays an important role in improving standardized test scores. |
Some schools in different countries do not give out homework but students score highly in exams But do we live in Sweden? Nope! This information is not relevant, as we live in New Zealand and not Sweden. Studying is homework, and for a student to score highly on an exam they would need to revise the material learnt in class and broaden their knowledge. Yes, students in sweden score very highly on tests with very little homework and less school hours, but this is because their teachers are given more time to prepare better lessons. |
Homework is turning children into couch potatoes as they spend an increasing amount of their time in their bedrooms instead of playing outside.
If a student were to not have homework, they would most likely still be on the couch, playing fortnite or watching netflix. Truly, children are turning into couch potatoes through devices, video games and other advanced technology. At Least homework is educational and teaches students important life lessons other than brainless video games which adolescents become obsessed with that decrease student productivity and have them sitting on the couch all night. How many of you play fortnite instead of doing your homework? |
Homework can cause actual pain. Lugging around that 10-20 pound book bag everyday can cause severe back, shoulder, and neck pains, and could even possibly lead to something worse.
Many modern day teachers set homework online, so in reality it depends on where you go to school and which teachers you have. Honestly we hardly get set any homework at all, so students should not be complaining about an average of 20 – 30 minutes of homework per night. |
Some households are louder than a classroom environment
If your household is louder than school than maybe the student should go to a library or sit outside or find a quiet spot to do their homework instead of just using it as an excuse to get away with not doing their homework. I sincerely doubt that any household would be louder than a classroom. If there were to be a home that was worse than school, students could go to the library or another quiet building in their town to complete their homework. |
Homework causes depression and sleep deprivation
If you cannot get your homework done at night without staying up past ten or eleven on school nights, then you are obviously spending too much time stalling before even starting your homework. Statistics show that only 15% of students receive more than 2 hours of homework per night. Give me an example of when you have had to stay up all night to do homework? Only inexperienced teachers set too much homework. |
Homework causes headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss, and stomach problems.
This point completely depends on the type of student that is doing the homework and how they sit doing it. Properly set homework should not cause headaches. If after 20 minutes of homework, you are suffering from these symptoms, you should probably see a doctor. |
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the audience and opposition, I am Tesoro Levy from the negative team and today I will be convincing you that homework should not be banned, just set properly. In high school classes, homework problems are critically important, especially in math and science; they show the concepts learnt in class in a whole new light, so you will know how equations work in general, not just how they work for an individual example. Homework is crucial for the development of student’s knowledge, but it also gives students the opportunity to revise their memory before exams and standardized tests. |
Scientist’s say that humans remember 75% of what they learn through practicing, while only 5% of what they learn in a lecture. When you first learn something it goes straight to your short term memory, but when you practice it, it goes to the more permanent, long term memory. Most importantly, a class environment may not be the best strategy to learning for particular students as noise levels from student conversations can distract students from doing their work and decrease their productivity. |
When noise in a classroom environment is deemed a difficulty, it can distract students and put them off topic, which can eventually lead to a decrease in their grades if they do not complete extra work at home where they can focus more easily. Chronic noise has a devastating effect on the academic achievement of students in loud schools. |
Researchers have found that environmental noise, background music, city sounds, people’s conversations and other students talking in class lead to a decrease in performance for most people. Many students cannot control their brain development. Furthermore, their lack of psychological and social maturity contributes to the loud noises heard in class which can lead to a decrease in productivity for other students. |
Did you know that over 70 per cent of students claimed that a classroom environment was too loud and distracting to focus in, while 90 percent of the students mentioned before achieved higher grades through working at home? Homework helps most students to relearn the materials taught in class so they can fully understand them. |
Statistics show that 91% of people that work from home are more productive than in a crowded workplace or vociferous school. Furthermore, if homework were to be banned, students would not have the opportunity to study or optionally do homework if they enjoy learning new material and further advancing their knowledge. |
70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and focus on the reasons as to why it should not be banned. Thank you. |
We can have a stat that says only 7% actually get those things
Statistics:
– Recent American surveys found that most students in the USA spent no more than an hour a night on homework.
-70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and now it is time to focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.
-A review by researchers at Duke University of more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 showed that, within limits, there is a positive interaction between the amount of homework which is done and student achievement.
-The Metlife study also found that 50 percent of students in grades seven to 12 spent more than an hour a night on homework, while 37 percent of students in grades three to six spent an hour or more on their homework per night.
– 91 Percent of People Who Work at Home Are More Productive Than at Work or School
– Children in schools bombarded by frequent aircraft noise don’t learn to read as well as children in quiet schools do, say Cornell University researchers
– “We’ve known for a long time that chronic noise is having a devastating effect on academic performance of children in noisy homes and schools,” says Gary Evans, an environmental psychologist in Cornell’s College of Human Ecology and an international expert on noise, crowding, and other forms of environmental stress.
– compared a total of 116 first and second graders from two elementary schools. One school was battered by peaks of up to 90 decibels of noise from low-flying planes every 6.6 minutes. The other school, closely matched for ethnicity and percentage of children receiving subsidized school lunches and speaking English as a second language, was in the same urban area but in a quiet neighborhood.
– Preschoolers in daycare centers located near elevated trains in New York City did poorer on psychomotor skills than their counterparts in quieter neighborhoods did. (Hambrick-Dixon, Developmental Psychology, 1985)
– Older students who attended schools near major New York airports had lower reading scores than children in schools located further from the airports did. (Green & Shore, Archives of Environmental Health, 1982)
– Children living near noisy highways in Los Angeles had lower reading scores and children living near a major airport there had more difficulty solving cognitive problems. (Cohen, Glass and Singer, Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology,1973 and 1980)
– Noise is more bothersome in crowded classrooms; teachers in those classrooms might resort to quieter, less effective teaching methods because of the conditions. (Gifford, Environmental Psychology, Allyn and Bacon, Inc., 1987)
– Language and cognitive skills develop more slowly in children raised in noisy homes. Possible reason: Parents in noisy homes interact less often with their children. (Wachs, American Psychological Association Conference, 1982)
– The background sound level exposure levels in the classrooms ranged between 33 and 42 dB(A)eq. The background sound in about 2/3 of the classrooms investigated was considered to be LFN. Pupils exposed to high LFN levels were not more annoyed than pupils exposed to low LFN levels.
– One meta-analysis examined 242 studies of the ways noise affects performance, and found that when it came to performing cognitive tasks—like staying attentive, reading and processing text, and working with numbers—performance was more affected by intermittent speech than by either continuous speech (which would have little variation in volume and rhythm) or non-speech noise.
Helpful stuff:
Students have to perform independently and be willing to read or write, acknowledging that if they struggle, they will have to work through the problem or the difficult words themselves
Helps you work independently and will get you further in life and help you get jobs. If you have good researching skills and you can find information from different resources it can get you far in life and you will have a successful future.
WHILE DELIVERING INFORMATION ABOUT STATISTICS, DON’T MENTION THE COUNTRY
3 Main Points:
Educational benefits, broadens general knowledge,
Home environment can be more productive than at school e.g maths class noise levels distract students and puts them off their work.
Helps in general, improves time management, develops important life skills, helps students to become more independent with their work.
Secret weapons:
“For example, Mr waugh doesn’t actually ask us to do any homework, we could get all our work done in class if we wanted to but we are inclined to do our homework to improve our grades or complete the required work load.”
Only give them one option…
If you choose to succeed in life, choose homework!
Give me an example of Homework without educational value
WHILE DELIVERING INFORMATION ABOUT STATISTICS, DON’T MENTION THE COUNTRY
We could do an hominem attack on one of the oppositions team members, saying something like “Why would you listen to someone with such a poor attitude to learning, like you” Attacking the members of the team and not the debate could make them forget what they are trying to say and distract them.
Lucia’s Speech:
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the opposition and the audience. I will now introduce our debating team, I am Lucia Brown, here is Tesoro Levy and Kahu Nepia. We strongly believe that homework is beneficial and should not be banned. Tesoro will be explaining that a home environment can actually be a more productive place to easily focus and work at your full potential. Kahu is explaining………. I will be telling you that homework doesn’t just improve grades it helps broaden general knowledge and everyday skills.
First of all, doing homework improves time management. For example when teachers give out homework they want it done by a certain time, if you get it completed by the deadline you will be one bit better at time management. Did you know 76.3 percent of students that had not completed their homework on time, then failed tests.
Students will become more independent when they complete homework,
Skills from homework:
Time management V
Less stress V
Good study habits V
Responsibility (independence) V
Finding their own way of learning V
Tesoro Maria Levy’s speech:
Home environment can be more productive.
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the audience and opposition, today I will be convincing you that homework should not be banned. In high school classes, homework problems are critically important; they show the concepts learnt in class in a whole new light, so you will know how equations work in general, not just how they work for an individual example. In science and maths, homework is critically important, but it also gives students the opportunity to revise their memory before essential exams, most importantly, a class environment may not be the best approach to learning for particular students as noise levels from student conversations can distract pupils from doing their work. Noise may or may not be problematic, depending on the social, cultural and pedagogical expectations of the students and teachers. When noise in a classroom environment is deemed a difficulty, it can distract students and put them off topic, which can eventually lead to a decrease in their grades if they do not complete extra work at home where they can focus more easily. Chronic noise has a devastating effect on the academic achievement of students in noisy schools. Hearing loss, vegetative responses, biochemical effects, speech interference, behavioural effects and personal reactions are all part of the problem of noise exposure. Through homework, students who have problems focusing in class can learn new material in a more quiet environment while overall increasing their productivity. For example, in math class, the noise levels are so high that I find it difficult to focus. Homework helps most students to relearn the materials taught in class so they can fully understand them. Statistics show that 91% of people that work from home are more productive than in a crowded workplace or noisy school. Furthermore, if homework were to be banned, students would not have the opportunity to study or optionally do homework if they enjoy learning new material and further advancing their knowledge. 70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.
Kahu: Homework doesn’t actually have to improve test scores, it can give children a wider knowledge and improve their overall understanding of everything not just academics. Homework also improves and helps set up kids for life skills, teaching them about time management and that if kids are late to hand in an assignment that it does actually matter if they are late or not. Homework also sets kids up for college with research skills Personal organisation, Time management, Working to deadlines, Able to research.
In school you can’t just be taught something and remember it off by heart, homework helps to set what you have just learnt in place and keep it in your memory longer.
