Romeo and Juliet

Act 1, Scene 2  Scene summary

Location: A street in the Italian city of Verona

Characters: Capulet, County Paris, Clown (servant to Capulet)

Time: Sunday Morning

Scene Events: Paris is eager to marry Capulet’s daughter, Juliet, but Capulet does not think that Juliet is old enough yet, that she is the only thing that he loves now. Paris explains that women younger than Juliet are already happily married. Capulet tells Paris that he is having a feast tonight and that he needs to win over the heart of his daughter before she is to be married to Paris. Capulet sends one of his servants off with the guest list to invite the following … “Signior Martino and his wife and daughters, County Anselme and his beauteous sisters, the lady widow of vitruvio, signior Placentio and his lovely nieces, Mercutio and his brother Valentine, mine uncle Capulet, his wife and daughters, my fair niece Rosaline, and Livia, signior Valentio and his cousin Tybalt, Lucio and the lively Helena. The servant passes by Romeo and as it turns out the Servant can not read so he invites Romeo without knowing that he is from the house of Montague. Romeo tells Benvolio that he will go to Capulets feast because Rosaline will be attending.

Quote: Romeo ” I’ll go along no such sight to be shown, But to rejoice in splendour of mine own”
