Scene summary

Location: a street in the Italian city of Verona

Characters: Montague boys, Capulet boys, Benvolio, Tybalt, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Montague, Lady Montague, Prince Escalus, Romeo.

Time: Sunday morning

Events: Sunday morning, Prince Escales, intercedes in a street fight between Benvolio, Tybalt and the Montague and Capulet men. The prince threatens to put to death anyone who fights in the streets again. Montague is worried about his son’s depression so he sends Romeo’s cousin, Benvolio, to find out why his son is so upset. Benvolio sees Romeo in the sycamore grove just before the sun came up, he did not speak to Romeo and Romeo did not speak to him either. Romeo tells Benvolio that he is in love with a girl but the girl does not love him back, Benvolio’s advice to Romeo is to seek out other women.
