How does conflict help to communicate the message of the play?.

William Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet possesses a wide expanse of themes and motifs surrounded around the idea of internal and external conflict between characters of significance. These ideas of conflict are reinforced by passages and quotations in the play which are of significance and communicate complex ideas which relate back to the lives of the characters that have spoken them. For instance, the “ancient grudge” between the Montagues and Capulets illustrates the theme of an external conflict in which two families of equal stance have had an ongoing feud that started back in ancient times and appears to have been passed on to current members of those families. Other examples of this theme are communicated consistently throughout Shakespeare’s literature and include Juliet’s inner struggle to make the right decision between what she desires and what her family demands her to do, Romeo’s internal conflict against the darker side of love and the idea of fate vs free will and how your fate is determined by your actions and the actions of others. These components of inner and outer conflicts are merged seamlessly into the script and often readers may not be able to depict what they are actually implying, however, they communicate complex messages which are needed to fully understand the true message of the play in which love triumphs hate.

Paragraph 1: Inner conflicts within Juliet “yet if thou swearst, thou may prove false at lovers perjuries”

  • pushes herself away from trusting Romeos love
  • Finishes speech by declaring her love for Romeo
  • Juliets inner conflict is amplified by her desire to make the right decision despite outside pressures from her family
  • The Nurse delivers the news of Tybalts death to Juliet and she has an inner conflict where she cannot believe that her love killed her cousin “What storm is this that blows so contrary? Is Romeo slaughtered, and is Tybalt dead? My dearest cousin and my dearer lord”
  • “My husband lives, that Tybalt would have slain, And Tybalt’s dead, that would have slain my husband”

Paragraph 2: Inner conflict within Romeo “O brawling love, O loving hate, O anything, of nothing first create”

In translation this quotation basically means that

Paragraph 3: Family feud between the Montagues and Capulets “Two households both alike in dignity”

“that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”

Paragraph 4: Predetermined fate: That you cannot escape your fate and that love triumps hate.

I fear too early for my mind misgives, some consequence yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly begin his fearful date

These violent delights have violent ends

My only love sprung from my only hate

Deny thy father and refuse thy name

Message = love triumphs hate.

Romeo and Juliet Quotes.

Romeo and Juliet uses conflict and opposites expand its ideas:

“Two households, both alike in dignity
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny”

“O brawling love, O loving hate”

“Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health”

Characters in Romeo and Juliet are not always what they seem:

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”

Romeo and Juliet explores the complex relationship between fate and free will:

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life”

“I fear, too early, for my mind misgives
Some consequence yet hanging in the stars
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels, and expire the term
Of a despisèd life closed in my breast
By some vile forfeit of untimely death”

Shakespeare’s language is where his true genius lies:

Title: Creative Writing Dystopia. Final Copy.

Beneath a thick layer of mist, an old bridge stood towering above a large mass of water which flowed beyond my vision, grey and dull from years of damage. I approached the bridge swiftly beneath the lurking eyes of the guards, being careful not to make a noise. My feet brushed lightly against the weak, cracked concrete of the bridge, which felt like it would cave in without a moments notice – but still, I kept walking.  I looked out over the horizon, my eyes following the flow of the river. Stars scattered the heavens, illuminating the night sky, which stretched like a dome over the city of lights. I began to haul my figure upon the smooth sides, my hand grasping the cold, hard steel, which served as a remembrance to the bitter reality of the world. Blistering gusts of wind whipped across the sharp edges of my face, sending long raven curls rushing behind my neck.

A figure emerged through the darkness that surrounded me. Skeletal, white hands just visible beneath a tattered black coat grasped the back of my neck, the cold embrace sent shivers running down my spine as I fell towards the surface of the ocean, my screams piercing the air. In just one minute my body would collide with the water’s surface as I met my watery grave. But now my hair whipped up like a ribbon, my blue silk dress, the colour of a midnight sky, clung tightly to my figure as the wind raced beneath me. If I didn’t die instantly from the impact, then I would have faced the unforgivable waters of the river as my body plummeted beneath the surface. As I flew closer, the water almost looked beautiful, like a wall of blue satin threaded with silver but of course, I knew what lurked beneath.

Darkness encased me as I plunged below the surface, water closing in all around my body, filling me with a deep dread. I didn’t want to die like this, but it was too hard to fight the force of the current, pushing further beneath the indigo waters and dragging me closer to the underwater graveyard which would be my burial ground. Slowly I merely let the darkness consume me and slipped soundlessly beneath the lapping waves.

I slowly begin to pry my eyelids open, my eyes take in every ray of light, and without a doubt, I know I have slept too long. My heart is pounding, mind racing, every thought in high-definition. As I adjust to my surroundings, I find myself enclosed by four familiar white walls, beneath the thin tarnished layers of old cotton sheets, dressed in a simple white hospital gown. Sweet, metallic pungency drafts through the air, making my nostrils burn with the scent of dried blood. White patches encircle my vision as I abruptly sit up, my hand gripping the hard edges of the bed frame to keep my balance. An IV stood to the left of my bed, containing traces of unfamiliar blue liquid that slowly emptied through a small plastic tube inserted into my arm, most likely a sedative. I yank off the plastic sticker connected to my arm and drop it to the floor, blue fluid leaking slowly onto the ground.

I began to ease myself upon my feet, every bone in my body aching, with an unpleasant warmth to it, merciless without escape. Hunger claws at me from inside my stomach and the need for food has never been so great. There is no escaping this time; I thought to my self while glancing around at my surroundings.  Surrounded by walls, there was nothing to do but stare at them. To look at the paint that had started to chip off as the years passed by – anything to pass the time, slowly going mad and wondering what would become of me while theorising impossible meanings from the wall’s blank stare.

A beep sounds from the outside of my room; someone enters through the starch white door and footsteps approach me. I don’t dare meet their eyes and instead bury my head further into the crook in my knees, for I already know who it is. I can feel her cold glare penetrating through me, expecting a response that I refuse to give. Without warning, she digs her sharp index finger into my chin and snaps my head up to meet her icy blue eyes. She screams my name, but it all just sounds like white noise to me. Tears creep their way down the curves of my face while I stare blatantly at the walls, my eyes becoming more swollen as the minutes pass and I desperately try to block out her threats.

She eventually steps aside to allow a man dressed in standard blue hospital scrubs to pass through, his features unrecognisable beneath the weight of my new shed tears. I barely notice the burning sensation in my right arm as a needle is pressed lightly into my bare flesh. My vision blurred, not from the tears welling up in the corners of my eyes, but from the effects of the sedative only moments after it was administered. My consciousness was floating through an empty space filled with thick static. Throughout the inky place, my heartbeats pounded loudly, echoing in my ears, alongside fading pleas for help. Feeling in my body slowly drained away until finally, all was black.

Students have to perform independently and be willing to read or write, acknowledging that if they struggle, they will have to work through the problem or the difficult words themselves
Our argument:
Talk about how homework teaches students that leaving things to the last minute causes the stress and aches that they are talking about so actually having that stress helps them work on their time management.

Time management:

Broadens general knowledge:

Sets kids up for the future and will help them in their life
. Talk about how it could help you earn a job by doing homework nd if you hadn’t done any of that work then you would probably get fired from the job

Family time

When students are in their younger years, family time is most likely a priority for them, but with advanced technology and new entertainment, the last thing that the average teenager wants to do when they get home from an overwhelming day at school is spend time with their family. When adolescents and teenagers get home, they will most likely be playing fortnite and using social media apps such as snapchat, Instagram and Facebook.  Everyone has enough spare time to get off his or her device and do at least a page of homework. How many of you play fortnite instead of doing homework or spending time with your family?

Homework produces a large amount of pointless work of little educational value

Give me an example of homework with no educational value? If the students give teachers feedback on what type of homework to give them than they can improve the quality and value of the work that they give you.

Marking homework takes up too much time

Well planned homework should not take up too much time to mark, and if the educational value of the homework has been improved than taking time to mark it might not be such a bad thing.  Teachers accept that marking student work is an important part of their job. Well planned homework should not take so long to mark that the rest of their job suffers, and it can inform their understanding of their students, helping them design new activities to engage and stretch their knowledge. As for recruitment, although teachers do often work in the evenings, they are not alone in this and they get long holidays to compensate.

Homework puts students off learning

If the homework is interesting enough and has enough elements that relate to the kids than they will not get bored and enjoy the homework a lot more. Homework can be fun, but it is also supposed to extend students knowledge further and improve their understanding of the topic.

Homework takes up too much time

Some teachers are bad at setting homework, and it should not take up too much of the students time, especially at our school. In year ten we get set very little homework. Therefore students should not be complaining about homework taking up too much of their time because 20 – 30 minutes of homework on average is not significantly much.

Stress

If you haven’t done your homework, you will get more stressed.

|If the students managed their time properly then they wouldn’t get stressed out on homework at all. They could, if they were diligent, get the homework done in one night. Stress is a part of homework, kids through their homework learn how to deal with stress which is important as in the future, there will be many stressful situations. By learning how to deal with stress at a young age will help in the future

Not enough time for activities and hobbies after school

If it’s useful and fun homework that has been set correctly then there should be ample time for after school activities. Some people’s hobbies are doing homework because they want to excel at certain subjects, so if homework were to be banned students that enjoy homework would not be allowed to do homework. If teenagers would have too much time for leisure activities, the probability that they will interfere with some illegal or criminal issues rises greatly.

The average teenager spends 6 hours on television, social media, and other advanced technology. 6 hours is a long time, so if you are saying that you do not have enough time for homework then you should rethink how much time you should spend and devices and you might not be managing your time well enough. Along with time management comes more free time, If you learn to manage your time properly, then you will get your homework done quicker with more time for extracurricular activities.

“Statistics show that homework does not improve grades”

Studying is homework, so how is a student supposed to get a good grade on a test without revising and studying. Homework isn’t necessarily used to always improve test scores, it is used to widen their knowledge and improve their understanding of the information given in class. Self-study is one of the most important steps in understanding learning materials. Homework allows students to practice what they were taught in class. It also gives them discipline and responsibility. Listening to the teacher in class is not enough, in order to achieve your goals and become a successful person you need to practice and learn how to work on your own.

A recent study shows that homework improves students grades by 72.9%

For students in the earliest years of school, homework can help to develop positive attitudes, good habits and personality traits. For students upper primary school years, homework plays a more direct role in fostering improved school achievement. For students in their high school years, homework plays an important role in improving standardized test scores.

Some schools in different countries do not give out homework but students score highly in exams But do we live in Sweden? Nope! This information is not relevant, as we live in New Zealand and not Sweden. Studying is homework, and for a student to score highly on an exam they would need to revise the material learnt in class and broaden their knowledge. Yes, students in sweden score very highly on tests with very little homework and less school hours, but this is because their teachers are given more time to prepare better lessons.
Homework is turning children into couch potatoes as they spend an increasing amount of their time in their bedrooms instead of playing outside.

If a student were to not have homework, they would most likely still be on the couch, playing fortnite or watching netflix. Truly, children are turning into couch potatoes through devices, video games and other advanced technology. At Least homework is educational and teaches students important life lessons other than brainless video games which adolescents become obsessed with that decrease student productivity and have them sitting on the couch all night.  How many of you play fortnite instead of doing your homework?

Homework can cause actual pain. Lugging around that 10-20 pound book bag everyday can cause severe back, shoulder, and neck pains, and could even possibly lead to something worse.

Many modern day teachers set homework online, so in reality it depends on where you go to school and which teachers you have. Honestly we hardly get set any homework at all, so students should not be complaining about an average of 20 – 30 minutes of homework per night.

Some households are louder than a classroom environment

If your household is louder than school than maybe the student should go to a library or sit outside or find a quiet spot to do their homework instead of just using it as an excuse to get away with not doing their homework.

I sincerely doubt that any household would be louder than a classroom. If there were to be a home that was worse than school, students could go to the library or another quiet building in their town to complete their homework.

Homework causes depression and sleep deprivation

If you cannot get your homework done at night without staying up past ten or eleven on school nights, then you are obviously spending too much time stalling before even starting your homework. Statistics show that only 15% of students receive  more than 2 hours of homework per night. Give me an example of when you have had to stay up all night to do homework? Only inexperienced teachers set too much homework.

Homework causes headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss, and stomach problems.

This point completely depends on the type of student that is doing the homework and how they sit doing it. Properly set homework should not cause headaches. If after 20 minutes of homework, you are suffering from these symptoms, you should probably see a doctor.

Hello ladies and gentlemen of the audience and opposition, I am Tesoro Levy from the negative team and today I will be convincing you that homework should not be banned, just set properly. In high school classes, homework problems are critically important, especially in math and science; they show the concepts learnt in class in a whole new light, so you will know how equations work in general, not just how they work for an individual example.  Homework is crucial for the development of student’s knowledge, but it also gives students the opportunity to revise their memory before exams and standardized tests.
Scientist’s say that humans remember 75% of what they learn through practicing, while only 5% of what they learn in a lecture. When you first learn something it goes straight to your short term memory, but when you practice it, it goes to the more permanent, long term memory. Most importantly, a class environment may not be the best strategy to learning for particular students as noise levels from student conversations can distract students from doing their work and decrease their productivity.
When noise in a classroom environment is deemed a difficulty, it can distract students and put them off topic, which can eventually lead to a decrease in their grades if they do not complete extra work at home where they can focus more easily. Chronic noise has a devastating effect on the academic achievement of students in loud  schools.
Researchers have found that environmental noise, background music, city sounds, people’s conversations and other students talking in class lead to a decrease in performance for most people. Many students cannot control their brain development. Furthermore, their lack of psychological and social maturity contributes to the loud noises heard in class which can lead to a decrease in productivity for other students.
Did you know that over 70 per cent of students claimed that a classroom environment was too loud and distracting to focus in, while 90 percent of the students mentioned before achieved higher grades through working at home? Homework helps most students to relearn the materials taught in class so they can fully understand them.
Statistics show that 91% of people that work from home are more productive than in a crowded workplace or vociferous school. Furthermore, if homework were to be banned, students would not have the opportunity to study or optionally do homework if they enjoy learning new material and further advancing their knowledge.
70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and focus on the reasons as to why it should not be banned. Thank you.

We can have a stat that says only 7% actually get those things

Statistics:
– Recent American surveys found that most students in the USA spent no more than an hour a night on homework.
-70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and now it is time to focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.
-A review by researchers at Duke University of more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 showed that, within limits, there is a positive interaction between the amount of homework which is done and student achievement.
-The Metlife study also found that 50 percent of students in grades seven to 12 spent more than an hour a night on homework, while 37 percent of students in grades three to six spent an hour or more on their homework per night.
– 91 Percent of People Who Work at Home Are More Productive Than at Work or School
– Children in schools bombarded by frequent aircraft noise don’t learn to read as well as children in quiet schools do, say Cornell University researchers
– “We’ve known for a long time that chronic noise is having a devastating effect on academic performance of children in noisy homes and schools,” says Gary Evans, an environmental psychologist in Cornell’s College of Human Ecology and an international expert on noise, crowding, and other forms of environmental stress.
– compared a total of 116 first and second graders from two elementary schools. One school was battered by peaks of up to 90 decibels of noise from low-flying planes every 6.6 minutes. The other school, closely matched for ethnicity and percentage of children receiving subsidized school lunches and speaking English as a second language, was in the same urban area but in a quiet neighborhood.
– Preschoolers in daycare centers located near elevated trains in New York City did poorer on psychomotor skills than their counterparts in quieter neighborhoods did. (Hambrick-Dixon, Developmental Psychology, 1985)
– Older students who attended schools near major New York airports had lower reading scores than children in schools located further from the airports did. (Green & Shore, Archives of Environmental Health, 1982)
– Children living near noisy highways in Los Angeles had lower reading scores and children living near a major airport there had more difficulty solving cognitive problems. (Cohen, Glass and Singer, Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology,1973 and 1980)
– Noise is more bothersome in crowded classrooms; teachers in those classrooms might resort to quieter, less effective teaching methods because of the conditions. (Gifford, Environmental Psychology, Allyn and Bacon, Inc., 1987)
– Language and cognitive skills develop more slowly in children raised in noisy homes. Possible reason: Parents in noisy homes interact less often with their children. (Wachs, American Psychological Association Conference, 1982)
– The background sound level exposure levels in the classrooms ranged between 33 and 42 dB(A)eq. The background sound in about 2/3 of the classrooms investigated was considered to be LFN. Pupils exposed to high LFN levels were not more annoyed than pupils exposed to low LFN levels.
– One meta-analysis examined 242 studies of the ways noise affects performance, and found that when it came to performing cognitive tasks—like staying attentive, reading and processing text, and working with numbers—performance was more affected by intermittent speech than by either continuous speech (which would have little variation in volume and rhythm) or non-speech noise.
Helpful stuff:
Students have to perform independently and be willing to read or write, acknowledging that if they struggle, they will have to work through the problem or the difficult words themselves

Helps you work independently and will get you further in life and help you get jobs. If you have good researching skills and you can find information from different resources it can get you far in life and you will have a successful future.

WHILE DELIVERING INFORMATION ABOUT STATISTICS, DON’T MENTION THE COUNTRY

3 Main Points:
Educational benefits, broadens general knowledge,
Home environment can be more productive than at school e.g maths class noise levels distract students and puts them off their work.
Helps in general, improves time management, develops important life skills, helps students to become more independent with their work.
Secret weapons:
“For example, Mr waugh doesn’t actually ask us to do any homework, we could get all our work done in class if we wanted to but we are inclined to do our homework to improve our grades or complete the required work load.”

Only give them one option…
If you choose to succeed in life, choose homework!
Give me an example of Homework without educational value

WHILE DELIVERING INFORMATION ABOUT STATISTICS, DON’T MENTION THE COUNTRY

We could do an hominem attack on one of the oppositions team members, saying something like “Why would you listen to someone with such a poor attitude to learning, like you” Attacking the members of the team and not the debate could make them forget what they are trying to say and distract them.

Lucia’s Speech:
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the opposition and the audience. I will now introduce our debating team, I am Lucia Brown, here is Tesoro Levy and Kahu Nepia. We strongly believe that homework is beneficial and should not be banned. Tesoro will be explaining that a home environment can actually be a more productive place to easily focus and work at your full potential. Kahu is explaining………. I will be telling you that homework doesn’t just improve grades it helps broaden general knowledge and everyday skills.
First of all, doing homework improves time management. For example when teachers give out homework they want it done by a certain time, if you get it completed by the deadline you will be one bit better at time management. Did you know 76.3 percent of students that had not completed their homework on time, then failed tests.
Students will become more independent when they complete homework,
Skills from homework:
Time management V
Less stress V
Good study habits V
Responsibility (independence) V
Finding their own way of learning V

Tesoro Maria Levy’s speech:
Home environment can be more productive.
Hello ladies and gentlemen of the audience and opposition, today I will be convincing you that homework should not be banned. In high school classes, homework problems are critically important; they show the concepts learnt in class in a whole new light, so you will know how equations work in general, not just how they work for an individual example. In science and maths, homework is critically important, but it also gives students the opportunity to revise their memory before essential exams, most importantly, a class environment may not be the best approach to learning for particular students as noise levels from student conversations can distract pupils from doing their work. Noise may or may not be problematic, depending on the social, cultural and pedagogical expectations of the students and teachers. When noise in a classroom environment is deemed a difficulty, it can distract students and put them off topic, which can eventually lead to a decrease in their grades if they do not complete extra work at home where they can focus more easily. Chronic noise has a devastating effect on the academic achievement of students in noisy schools. Hearing loss, vegetative responses, biochemical effects, speech interference, behavioural effects and personal reactions are all part of the problem of noise exposure. Through homework, students who have problems focusing in class can learn new material in a more quiet environment while overall increasing their productivity. For example, in math class, the noise levels are so high that I find it difficult to focus. Homework helps most students to relearn the materials taught in class so they can fully understand them. Statistics show that 91% of people that work from home are more productive than in a crowded workplace or noisy school. Furthermore, if homework were to be banned, students would not have the opportunity to study or optionally do homework if they enjoy learning new material and further advancing their knowledge. 70% of students show better academic success thanks to homework they were completing. Consequently, we should not underestimate its benefits and focus on the reasons why it should not be banned.

Kahu: Homework doesn’t actually have to improve test scores, it can give children a wider knowledge and improve their overall understanding of everything not just academics. Homework also improves and helps set up kids for life skills, teaching them about time management and that if kids are late to hand in an assignment that it does actually matter if they are late or not. Homework also sets kids up for college with research skills Personal organisation, Time management, Working to deadlines, Able to research.
In school you can’t just be taught something and remember it off by heart, homework helps to set what you have just learnt in place and keep it in your memory longer.

Romeo And Juliet Project- Write a scene.

Scene 1, Act 1

Setting: The Maxwell nightclub, New York City.

FRANCESCO and GREGORIO, members of the De La Cruz street mob enter the Maxwell nightclub carrying knives and firearms.

FRANCESCO
Gregorio, I tell you, I’m ready for them. Let a Coveney so much as step foot in the bar tonight, and you’ll see how quick I am.

GREGORIO
Sure. How quick you are to run away, you mean.

FRANCESCO
Not from the Coveney’s. When it comes to that gang, I’ll take on any of their men or woman.

GREGORIO
I know that’s your level. Why quarrel with the women? This is between the men.

FRANCESCO
When I’ve dealt with the men, I’ll take care of the Women. Don’t you worry about that, Gregorio.

GREGORIO
Well, here’s your chance to show me. (Gregorio points to two young members of the downtown Coveney gang entering through the back door of the Maxwell nightclub, dressed in all back)

FRANCESCO
Right then, Gregorio. Follow me

FRANCESCO and GREGORIO chase after two members of the Coveney gang through the back entrance of the nightclub

FRANCESCO
We’re on, pick a fight with them, I’ll be right behind you

GREGORIO
That’s what I’m afraid of. Be careful; We must not put ourselves in the wrong. Let them be the ones to start.

FRANCESCO
Alright. We might as well have some fun. It won’t come to anything serious. Just a bit of fun, that’s all. Look they’re over there at the bar sitting down. I’ll point my gun at them as we pass by, let’s see what happens.

GREGORIO
Good thinking, If they can withstand that it will show them up.

GREGORIO and FRANCESCO walked pass the bar where the two Coveney mobsters were seated. FRANCESCO pulled out his “Colt M1911A1” and pointed the barrel at TONY and LORENZO, two Coveney mobsters.

TONY
Are you pointing your roscoe at us?

FRANCESCO
I’m pointing my Roscoe, as you can see.

TONY
We can see that. Are you pointing your roscoe at us?

FRANCESCO
(To GREGORIO)
Is the law on our side if I say “Yes”?

GREGORIO
(Aside to FRANCESCO)
No!

FRANCESCO
No, I’m not pointing my Roscoe at you

TONY
Well, that’s alright then.

FRANCESCO
But I’m pointing my Roscoe, though.

GREGORIO
Do you want to make something of it?

TONY
Start a fight? No, I don’t

FRANCESCO
Because if you do, I’m your man. I don’t know who you think you are but I’ll have you know my boss is as good as yours.

TONY
He’s not better, though

FRANCESCO
Well…

GIOVANNI enters

GREGORIO
(Aside to FRANCESCO)
Look, there’s one of bosses relatives. Say “better.”

FRANCESCO
(To TONY)
There’s something I need to tell you. My boss is better.

TONY
You’re a liar! Come on shoot if you’re men.

They fight

GIOVANNI
(Pulls out his gun)
Break it up you fools. You don’t know what you’re doing. Put your guns away now!

TIBERIO enters

TIBERIO
Hey Giovanni, funny finding you fighting with the gangsters. You’ve pulled out your roscoe to fight against these worthless thugs?

GIOVANNI
I’m only trying to keep the peace, either put away your gun or use it to help me part these thugs.

TIBERIO
What! A Roscoe in your hands and you’re talking about peace? Don’t make me laugh. Peace, I hate the word, just as I hate all Coveney members especially you!

(With that TIBERIO began to shoot at GIOVANNI forcing him to turn and defend himself. The four young gangsters were still fighting, and others in the bar had joined in on the action)

MR DE LA CRUZ enters with his wife, MRS DE LA CRUZ.

MR DE LA CRUZ
What’s this racket? What are my gang members doing at two o’clock in the morning?

MR COVENEY enters with his wife, MRS COVENEY.

MR COVENEY
DE LA CRUZ, you villain. (MRS COVENEY holds him back)
(To his wife) You must let me go immediately. Defensive De La Cruz desperately displays demand for vengeance.

MR DE LA CRUZ
(To MRS DE LA CRUZ)
I want my Thompson 1928. Old Coveney is here with his gang, and he’s waving his roscoe around to taunt me.
(To MR COVENEY)
Come on, let’s fight!

MRS DE LA CRUZ
Stop it! You’re not taking one more step towards the enemy. What do you think you’re doing, I won’t let you fight.

(Just as Mr De La Cruz broke free from his wife’s grasp and was rushing to meet Capulet, who had answered his challenge by coming out to the piazza, a dozen police cars came into view while officers rushed out to break apart the mobs)

CHIEF OF POLICE
These damned De La Cruz’s, those damned Coveney’s. Down with the lot of them.

CHIEF OF POLICE
This is the third time that both gangs led by De La Cruz and Coveney have disturbed the tranquillity of our city and obliged the laws to make peace between you. It seems that you think the laws don’t apply to you. You are both so blighted with hatred. So this is what I am going to order. If you ever disturb the streets again, every member of both gangs will pay the forfeit of the peace.
Now go home all of you! Wait, Mr De La Cruz, you will come with me. And you Mr Coveney, will come and see me tomorrow morning.

In my play, the two families were represented as two major mafia gangs battling against each other for control of New York City’s underworld, they would not have the same social standing as the Montagues and Capulets but rather be set on the other end of the social scale. I used Italian names to represent the Italian ancestry of the mafia. Words such as Roscoe represent the mafia gang slang for handgun. Costumes would be modern. The older generations would wear expensive designer clothing and the younger generations would be split to show their social ranking. Servants would wear baggy ripped clothing while the younger family members would wear causal branded clothing to represent their place in society as descendants of the two main gang leaders.

Glossary

Roscoe: Slang word for handgun used by Mafia street gangs.

Romeo and Juliet – Project – Rewrite a scene.

LADY CAPULET and the NURSE enter.

LADY CAPULET
Nurse, where’s my daughter? Tell her to come to me. I must speak with her.

NURSE
I swear to you by my virginity at age twelve, I already told her to see you. Come on! Where is Juliet? What is she doing? Why here she is now!

JULIET enters.

JULIET
What is it, Nurse? Who is calling for me?

NURSE
Your mother is looking for you.

JULIET
Mother, I’m here. What do you require from me?

LADY CAPULET
I’ll tell you what’s the matter. Nurse, leave us alone to talk for a minute. My daughter and I must speak privately. Nurse, come back here. I have changed my mind and just remembered you could listen to our secrets. You know how young my daughter is.

NURSE
Yes, of course, I know her age down to the hour.

LADY CAPULET
She’s not yet fourteen.

NURSE
I’d bet fourteen of my teeth. But, I’m sorry to say, I only have four teeth. She’s not fourteen. How long is it until August the 1st.

LADY CAPULET
Around a fortnight and several additional days.

NURSE

Whether it’s even or odd, of all of the days in the year, on the eve of Lammastide, she will be fourteen. She and my daughter, Susan, God bless her and all Catholic babies born on the same day. Although Susan died and remains with God. She was too good for me. But as mentioned before, on the eve of Lammastide, she will be fourteen. Yes, indeed she will. I remember it so well, its been eleven years since the great English earthquake. Young Juliet stopped nursing from me on that very day. You and your husband were away in Mantua. I was sitting under the wall of the dovehouse. The pretty little babe started to struggle against me just before the dovehouse shook with the quake. That was almost eleven years ago but I remember it as if it were yesterday. No, I swear I can remember, by then she could stand up without my assistance. I remember because she had cut her forehead the day before. My husband, he was a happy man, picked up young Juliet. “Oh” he said, “Did you fall on your face?”. You’ll fall backwards when you grow up, won’t you, Juliet? And I swear the pretty little babe stopped crying and said “Yes” Oh how great is it to watch a joke come true. Such memories of Juliet’s childhood, I bet if I live one thousand years, I’ll never forget it.

LADY CAPULET
Enough of your nonsense, Nurse. Please be quiet or leave.

NURSE
Yes, madam. But I can’t help laughing at the fact the baby stopped crying and said, “Yes.” I swear, she had a bump on her forehead as big as an egg. It was a severe bruise, and she was sobbing bitterly. “Yes,” said my husband, “Did you fall on your face? You’ll fall back when you are older, won’t you, Juliet?” And she stopped crying and said, “Yes.”

JULIET
Nurse, please, stop this ridiculous account of my childhood.

NURSE
Ok, as you wish madam. I’m done talking. You were the most beautiful baby I have ever nursed. If I live to see the day you become someone’s bride, all of my wishes will come true.

LADY CAPULET
Well now that we are on the topic, marriage is precisely what we have to discuss. Tell me, Juliet, what is your opinion on marriage?

JULIET
It is an honour that I don’t wish for.

NURSE
“An honour?” If I weren’t your only nurse, I’d say you had sucked wisdom from the woman that fed you.

LADY CAPULET
Well, you must start thinking about marriage now. Here in Verona, there are girls younger than you from noble families like ours, who have already become mothers. By my account, I was already your mother at just about your age, while you remain a virgin. Well then, I must tell you that the noble County Paris has asked for you to be his bride.

NURSE
What a man that Paris is, Juliet. He’s as high a man as any in the whole world. He’s equally as perfect as if he were sculpted from wax.

LADY CAPULET
Verona’s summer has no flower as fine as him.

NURSE
Indeed, he’s a flower. In faith, indeed a beautiful flower.

LADY CAPULET
(to JULIET) What do you say? Could you love the gentleman? Tonight at our old accustomed feast you will meet him. Study Paris’s face, read him like you would read a book. Examine every line of his gorgeous features and see how they make him such a handsome man. If you are confused, look into his eyes. This man is single, only lacking a bride to make him impeccable. As is right, fish live in the sea, it’s wrong for such a beautiful girl, like yourself to hide from a handsome man such as County Paris. That man is admired in the eyes of many. Whoever becomes his bride will be just as valued. You would share all that he possesses, and by having him as your husband, you would lose nothing.

NURSE
Lose nothing? In fact madam, you’d get much bigger. Men make women bigger through getting them pregnant.

LADY CAPULET
(to JULIET) Answer quickly, as we do not have much time until the feast. Can you accept County Paris’s love?

JULIET
I’ll look at him and try to admire him, at the very least if he seems likeable. But I can’t guarantee that I will fall for him.

PETER enters.

PETER
Madam, the guests have arrived, dinner has been served, people are beginning to ask for you and Juliet. In the pantry, people are cursing the Nurse. Everything is out of control. I must go and serve the guests now. Please, ma’am, follow straight after me to the ballroom.

LADY CAPULET
Thank you, we will follow you. Juliet, Count Paris is waiting for you downstairs.

NURSE
Go, madam, seek a man who’ll give you pleasant nights at the end of pleasant days.
